I’ve wasted an unnecessary amount of time rewriting hooks.

The frustrating thing was that while some worked, most didn't.

But I couldn’t pinpoint why.

Since growing my IG to 389k followers, I’ve identified the 5-layer-system that makes or breaks any hook.

You can apply this to fix the first second of your video today.

The best thing is, you’ll understand WHY people will stop to watch.

But first things first:

Hooks are not just clever lines.

For a long time, I’d put all my focus on testing punchy openers and rewriting that first sentence.

But I realized something:

People weren’t reacting to my words.

They were reacting to the first moment.

The frame.

The energy.

The movement.

The sound.

Once I stopped obsessing over the sentence and started obsessing over the first second…Everything changed.

Hooks don’t fail because they’re not clever.

They fail because the sensory signals aren’t aligned.

The 5-Layer Hook System

1. Visual Hook

Before they stop to hear you, they see you.

  • Is there contrast? (movement vs stillness)

  • Is something being revealed?

  • Are you showing outcome first?

  • Would a frozen frame create curiosity?

But if the first frame is boring, nothing else matters.

2. Verbal Hook

Clarity beats cleverness.

  • Instead of: “You won’t believe this…”

  • Say: “This is why your video dies in 3 seconds.”

Specific problem.

Specific outcome.

Specific mistake.

Clever usually = confusing.

3. Text Hook

Most people scroll without sound.

Your overlay should:

  • Say ONE idea

  • Be instantly readable

  • Match what you’re saying in the video

If visual, text, and words don’t match → brain gets confused → swipe.

Alignment > creativity.

4. Audio Hook

Sound sets emotion before logic.

  • Suspense = curiosity

  • Energy = momentum

  • Silence = tension

Wrong music is worse than no music.

5. Energy Hook

Your delivery matters.

Flat energy kills retention, uncertainty leaks.

The nervous system reads tone and body language before it processes meaning.

Pro Tip:

Freeze your video at 0:01.

Ask yourself:

“Would I stop on this?”

If not, ask yourself ‘why?’ then fix the frame before rewriting the script.

Do this today:

Film 1 video

Make the first frame visually different from your usual content

Add one clear, bold overlay that matches your exact first sentence

Remove any music that doesn’t match the emotion

Post it.

If you plan to put this to the test, you should know about the Creator Challenge because the winner gets a DJI Osmo Nano!

It’s a lightweight, wearable camera that makes capturing '0:01 worthy' footage near-effortless.

The challenge deadline is March 8th.

Remember:

You don’t need better hook lines.

You need better first seconds.

Let’s grow. 💥
